Wow. That didn't take long. It was only two days ago that marijuana stocks like Growlife Inc. (OTCBB:PHOT), Medical Marijuana Inc. (OTCMKTS:MJNA), Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS), Medbox Inc. (OTCMKTS:MDBX), and Hemp, Inc. (OTCMKTS:HEMP) were all the rage, flying high on the heels of a new year... a new year in which marijuana was legalized (for one reason or another) in two more states. HEMP was up as much as 700% in less than three weeks at one point. MDBX gained 300% at the beginning of the year, when recreational marijuana began to be legally sold in Colorado. CBIS jumped 400% off of its December low. MJNA nearly doubled on the advent of new marijuana venues. PHOT soared more than 130% since the end of last year on the legalization of marijuana. It was, truthfully, some of the fastest big money that traders have ever made in the market.

Much like Nuvilex, Cannabis Science Inc. (OTCMKTS:CBIS) appears to simply be another conventional biotech outfit. And, truth be told, that's what CBIS is. It just happens to be developing two drugs based on cannabinoids... one to reat HIV/AIDS, and the other to treat cancer. Both drugs are in preclinical trials right now, so an actual marketable product is still years down the road for Cannabis Science Inc. But, as a legitimate biotechnology that isn't aiming to simply fuel tokers' needs, it's not going to hit any regulatory or law-enforcement roadblocks.

The SEC has halted trading of small cap marijuana stock Growlife Inc (OTCMKTS: PHOT) after a relatively brief trading halt forAdvanced Cannabis Solutions, Inc (OTCMKTS: CANN), but Tranzbyte Corp (OTCMKTS: ERBB), Cannabis Science Inc (OTCMKTS: CBIS) and Medical Marijuana Inc (OTCMKTS: MJNA) are still very much alive. However and as I have noted (repeatedly)in the past (see here), Medical Marijuana Inc has aformer CEO who has been indicted for a multi-state mortgage fraud scam/ponzi scheme while Medbox Inc (OTCMKTS: MDBX) is another marijuana stock with some ssuesthat were summed up nicely in a Southern Investigative Reporting Foundation article cleverly entitled: Tinkerer, Lawyer, Hustler, Lies: One Man Path to a Dope Fortune. Obviously, investing in marijuana stocks is not for conservative. Nevertheless, there isstill plenty of good or bad news for investors in the marijuana sector to inhale, including the following:

Best Biotech Companies To Buy For 2014: Bio-Path Holdings Inc (BPTH)

Bio-Path Holdings Inc is a development stage company. The Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Bio-Path, Inc. is engaged in the business of developing cancer therapeutics. As of December 31, 2011, the Company had licenses from The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (MD Anderson) for three lead products and nucleic acid delivery technology, including tumor targeting technology. The licenses provide drug delivery platform technology with composition of matter intellectual property for antisense that enables systemic delivery of antisense, formulation intellectual property for systemic delivery of small interfering Ribonucleic acid (RNA) (siRNA) and small molecules for treatment of cancer. The Company issued a press release announcing that the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had allowed an IND (investigational new drug) for its lead cancer drug candidate liposomal BP-100-1.01 (or Liposomal Grb-2 or L-Grb-2) to proceed into clinical trials.

In February, 2012, the Company completed requirements for treating patients in the second cohort. The dose being used for treatment in the third cohort is double the dose that was used to treat patients in the second cohort. At the end of February, 2012, enrollment continued in the third cohort of the clinical trial and patients are being treated.

BP-100-1.01

BP-100-1.01 is the Company's lead lipid delivery antisense drug candidate, which is being clinically tested in patients having acute myeloid leukemia (AML), chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Receipt of an IND allowed the Company to commence its Phase I clinical trial to study L-Grb-2 in human patients. Phase I clinical trial is a dose-escalating study to determine the safety and tolerance of escalating doses of L-Grb-2. The clinical trial is being conducted at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. As of December 31, 2011, the trial is in the middle of ! testing the third dose in patients.

BP-100-2.01

BP-100-1.02 is Liposomal Bcl-2 (also L-Bcl-2), another liposomal antisense drug candidate that was licensed from MD Anderson. This drug has pre-clinical testing data package. The target protein for this drug candidate, Bcl-2, is involved in regulating programmed cell death. In cancer, the Bcl-2 protein can over-express, which can lead to a situation, in which the Bcl-2 protein blocks the cell normal death signals, making the cancer cell resistant to chemotherapy. Types of cancer potentially treatable with L-Bcl-2 include lymphoma, prostate cancer, small cell lung cancer, breast cancer, melanoma, chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL) and several others.

It a new year and the first one and a half trading weeks of 2014 has not disappointed biotech investors as the sector and mid cap or small cap biotech orpharma stocks like Intercept Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: ICPT), Epizyme Inc (NASDAQ: EPZM), Tonix Pharmaceuticals Holding Corp (NASDAQ: TNXP) and TNI BioTech Inc (OTCQB: TNIB) either surging or producing some news plus there have been IPO filings for future listings forFlexion Therapeutics (NASDAQ: FLXN), Aldexa Therapeutics (NASDAQ: ALDX), Retrophin (NASDAQ:RTRX) and Dicerna Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: DRNA). Consider the following news so far this year:

  • [By John Udovich]

Follow-on Stock Offerings From Small Cap Biotech Stocks. Thanks to the boom in biotech IPOs along with the sector overall performance, already listed biotechs have the option to ask investors for more cash in the form of a follow-on offering. These small capsincluded Epizyme Inc (NASDAQ: EPZM) which raised $88 million, Halozyme Therapeutics, Inc (NASDAQ: HALO) which raised $100 million, Agenus Inc (NASDAQ: AGEN) which raised $52 million and Idera Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ: IDRA) which raised $36 million. FierceBiotech.com noted that thesteady flow of about $4.5 billion a year in venture cashalong withmore than $3.5 billion from IPOs last year plus all of thefollow-ons are helping to foster both company growth andaccelerate drugdevelopment programs. Mixed Bag for Biotech IPOs. Last Wednesday also saw two small cap biotech IPOs fizzle in one daywith small cap T cell vaccine developerGenocea Biosciences Inc (NASDAQ: GNCA) raising $60 million but then ending the day down 8.3% to close at $11 while Dutch drug developer uniQure NV (QURE) raised $81.9 million but fell more than 14% to $14.61. he mood is incredibly positive. Capital is flowing. [The biotech IPOs]have been burning hot. I think it too early to suggest that is changing. I can predict the overall economy any better than anyone else, but I would expect a pretty good year for IPOs./p>
