The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) is down after Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) and Intel (NASDAQ: INTC ) both reported weaker-than-expected earnings, pulling their sectors down with them. All but three of the 30 Dow stocks are down for the day, with Johnson & Johnson among the few making gains. As of 1:15 p.m. EDT the Dow is down 157 points, or 1.06%, to 14,599. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC ) is down 1.7% to 1,548.
Intel is down 0.5% after yesterday's after-hours earnings report fell short of analyst expectations. Estimates called for a 22.5% drop in earnings per share to $0.41 and a 2% drop in revenue to $12.61 billion. Intel reported EPS of $0.40 and revenue of $12.58 billion. Intel and other tech stocks were hit last week when market researcher IDC reported that PC sales were down 14% in Q1, falling far more than its earlier prediction of 8%. Intel's earnings validate that report and are one of the two major reasons the tech sector as a whole is down today. Looking forward, Intel expects sales to remain roughly constant in the second quarter due to slowing PC demand. It kept its forecast for the rest of the year constant.

In retrospect, their pullbacks come as no real surprise. Neither Voxeljet AG (NYSE:VJET) nor Camtek LTD. (NASDAQ:CAMT) saw their shares soar on any news that was meaningfully sustainable, and after the "shoot first, ask questions later" market had a chance to start asking questions, it became clear that - even with the largest of glimmers of corporate progress unveiled a few weeks ago - CAMT and VJET both had been bid up more on hype and less on substance. Meanwhile (and this could be bitterly ironic to some), a small cap play in the same 3D printing space that (1) didn't beat the daylights out of its hype-drum, and (2) is actually much closer to bringing a revenue-bearing product to the market [per today's news - more on that below] isn't getting anywhere near the same attention. That company? Makism 3D Corp. (OTCBB:MDDD). The good news is, MDDD finally looks like it's revving its engine, while Camtek and Voxeljet AG shares continue to deteriorate.

Facebook gets much of its flash memory from Fusion-io (NYSE: FIO ) , where it accounts for more than a third of the memory maker's total revenues, and it was buying up a lot more of its flash in the fiscal fourth quarter than Fusion-io had anticipated. While the current quarter is going to see a bit of a drop-off in demand from Facebook, the flash-memory maker expects to be able to keep the strong relationship going in the future. Whether it will be the one making the "worst possible flash" remains to be seen.
