Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance Inc. Earnings: Can Stunning Growth Continue?

On Tuesday, Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance (NASDAQ: ULTA  ) will release its quarterly report, and shareholders haven't been able to recover from steep losses toward the end of 2013. But with department-store retailers Macy's (NYSE: M  ) and Nordstrom (NYSE: JWN  ) working hard to capture their own share of the beauty market, Ulta Salon will have to work even harder to woo customers into its doors and make the most of the opportunity once they arrive.

Ulta Salon has grown impressively with its combination of in-store salons and premium beauty products at reasonable prices. By giving customers a chance to obtain professional salon services, Ulta gets the benefit of an in-store cross-referral team to drive sales of its retail products, and conversely, retail sales specialists can push buyers toward salon services as well. With the company's bottom line still showing a lot of promise, when will the share price bounce back? Let's take an early look at what's been happening with Ulta Salon over the past quarter and what we're likely to see in its report.

Can Ulta Salon earnings look prettier this quarter?
In recent months, investors have suffered a setback in their views on Ulta Salon earnings, with estimtes for the April quarter cut by more than a nickel per share and full-year projections reduced by 3% to 5% over the next couple of years. The stock has stayed down, falling another 2% after plunging late last year.

By all accounts, Ulta Salon's fiscal fourth-quarter report reenergized shareholders in their views on the company. Same-store sales rose 9.2%, pushing overall revenue up more than 14% thanks in part to the opening of 11 new stores during the quarter. Even with a tough promotional environment during the holiday quarter, Ulta managed to keep its gross margins at fairly impressive levels. Moreover, even though guidance of just 4% to 6% growth in comps represented a slowdown, Ulta appears poised to keep moving forward as the economy continues to improve.

Source: Ulta Salon.

After the earnings report, Ulta Salon got positive comments from professional analysts. In particular, many investors believe that Ulta has plenty of room to expand, with demand for its services remaining strong even in a somewhat soft economic recovery. Given the proven popularity of the concept, it makes sense for Ulta Salon to open new stores until it comes much closer to reaching a saturation point.

Still, Ulta faces strengthening competition. Upscale retailers Macy's and Nordstrom have long recognized the value of premium cosmetics as an essential part of their overall success, and as they look for new ways to grow, integrating beauty services of their own could be a direction that would pose a direct threat to Ulta. Moreover, once customers learn which cosmetics and other beauty products they need, Ulta faces the threat of online substitution from lower-priced e-commerce sites.

In the Ulta Salon earnings report, watch to see how well the company is able to keep growing on all fronts. As long as comps stay healthy and expansion plans remain in place, then Ulta will have the ability to recover from its share slump last year.

5 Best Blue Chip Stocks To Buy Right Now: Philip Morris International Inc(PM)

Philip Morris International Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in markets outside of the United States. Its international product brand line comprises Marlboro, Merit, Parliament, Virginia Slims, L&M, Chesterfield, Bond Street, Lark, Muratti, Next, Philip Morris, and Red & White. The company also offers its products under the A Mild, Dji Sam Soe, and A Hijau in Indonesia; Diana in Italy; Optima and Apollo-Soyuz in the Russian Federation; Morven Gold in Pakistan; Boston in Colombia; Belmont, Canadian Classics, and Number 7 in Canada; Best and Classic in Serbia; f6 in Germany; Delicados in Mexico; Assos in Greece; and Petra in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It operates primarily in the European Union, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Canada, and Latin America. The company is based in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Stocks with low turnover include Philip Morris International (PM), Schlumberger (SLB), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), General Electric (GE) and Automatic Data Processing (ADP).

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

As the second-largest tobacco company in the world, $137 billion cigarette company Philip Morris International (PM) has the whole "sin stock" thing down pat. PM owns nearly a third of the ex-China market for cigarettes, with some of the most popular global brands under its corporate umbrella. At the top of the pack is the firm's flagship Marlboro label, which accounts for more than a third of volume. Other brands include L&M, Philip Morris, and Parliament.

But don't mistake PM for the company manufacturing Marlboro cigarettes here in the U.S. -- this firm, which spun out from Altria (MO) in 2008, is 100% ex-U.S. Tha! t's actually spectacular positioning, because it means that PM is the part of legacy Altria's tobacco business that's actually still growing. At the same time that cigarette sales here in the U.S. die a slow death, PM's emerging market business is seeing quick growth rates. The combination of a sticky product (consumers don't tend to switch cigarette brands often), and premium positioning with Marlboro means that PM earns thick net profit margins (28% last year) for its trouble.

The strong dollar has been a thorn in PM's side in the last few years -- since the firm earns revenues in local currencies and then reports in dollars, any upside in the greenback presents currency risk. Even so, growth in the firm's core emerging markets has outpaced the dollar's climb in this environment. Another mitigating factor is PM's huge 4.5% dividend yield -- with low interest rates likely to persist for some time, that yield should look increasingly attractive as time wears on.

Similarly, in 2008, Altria spun off its Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) unit. In that case, Philip Morris represented the larger portion of the business, making up almost 70% of the overall value of the pre-merger company. Again, the dividends that Altria paid after the merger were in line with the domestic segment's previous share of payouts.

…large stocks can outperform in 'risk on,' rising markets, as well as in bifurcated markets like this year. A period of large cap outperformance is not necessarily a bear market phenomenon. The large cap rally during the dot-com boom is a classic example, as large technology companies led the market. In the '80s, large multinational growth companies such as Coca-Cola (KO), Pfizer (PFE), and Philip Morris (PM) led the charge. It is also important to note that during these periods both ! large and! small stocks delivered positive returns.

Beware Uber's New Year's Eve price surge

uber nye fare surge NEW YORK (CNNMoney) New Year's Eve is one of Uber's busiest nights of the year. But that could mean you start 2015 with a much lighter wallet.

The controversial startup is expecting to service 2 million riders worldwide on New Year's Eve alone.

An Uber spokeswoman said New Year's Eve 2014 was one of Uber's busiest days. And the company has quadrupled its presence compared to last New Year's Eve. It's now operating in over 260 cities across the world -- up from 66 last year.

But how much -- or how little -- might riders pay? That's unpredictable due to Uber's price algorithm, which charges riders inordinate sums of money during periods when its cars are most in demand. (Hello, New Years Eve!)

Last year, the company issued a blog post ahead of New Year's Eve, explaining its surge pricing and providing timing guidelines (best times to ride: before 8 p.m., between 10:30 p.m. and 12:15 a.m., and after 3:00 a.m.). It's expected to publish a similar post Tuesday.

Uber requires users to confirm the price so there are no surprises, but there was still plenty of criticism from riders who felt they'd been unfairly gouged.

Last year, Twitter user @Uber_Surge retweeted receipts from riders impacted by the surge. Prices ranged from a 4.85 mile ride in Pennsylvania that cost $265 to a 59.13 mile ride in Texas that totaled $731.75.

Its surge pricing -- which the company is seeking to patent -- has been heavily criticized. Most recently, it caught flak for inflating prices during the Sydney hostage crisis. (It later refunded rides and issued a blog post apology to explain its algorithm, which operates automatically.)

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on MeadWestvaco (NYSE: MWV  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By Lauren Pollock]

MeadWestvaco Corp.(MWV) expanded its cost-cutting efforts and said it plans to simplify the structure of its packaging businesses, as it strives to improve its performance.

  • [By ovenerio]

The company has a current ROE of 14.5% which is higher than the industry median. Also, it is higher than the ones exhibit by Sealed Air Corp (SEE) and Sonoco Products Co (SON). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking at those levels, MeadWestvaco Corp (MWV) and Packaging Corp of America (PKG) could be the options. It is very important to understand this metric before investing, and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

When you’re stock has been lagging the S&P 500, sometimes drastic action must be followed by even more drastic action. Case in point: MeadWestvaco (MWV), which announced a program of cost cutting on the heels of one announced last year.

  • [By Saibus Research]

Consolidation has been incremental in the paper and forest products industry. In May 2012, Resolute Forest Products (RFP) (formerly AbitibiBowater) announced that it had acquired 50.1% of Fibrek and acquired the remaining 49.9% in August. 2011 saw International Paper (IP) announce a hostile takeover of Temple-Inland and after offering $32/share in cash as well as the assumption of $600M of TIN's debt, IP was able to close the deal in February 2012. 2011 also saw Rock-Tenn (RKT) acquire Smurfit-Stone to create the number two player in the linerboard segment with 20% market share, trailing only International Paper's 40%. We see these moves as a prudent step to consolidation in the industry as certain types of paper such as newsprint and uncoated free sheet (office paper) are seeing falling demand due to increased use of digital resources.

Let's be clear: A score in the low 70s is a "C-" at best. There's plenty of room for improvement here. These industries encompass two Dow Jones (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) components, but membership in that elite club doesn't score any points in consumer satisfaction. AT&T's (NYSE: T  ) U-Verse service scores a dismal 65 in the Internet category and a somewhat more respectable 71 in the TV service field. The Dow's two telecoms would be laughed out of nearly any other industry, given these dismal ACSI scores.

Theodore Roosevelt's ascent to the presidency following President William McKinley's assassination revived the Sherman Antitrust Act from near-death, and it was finally used to dismantle a company in 1904. That year, the Northern Securities railroad trust -- controlled by J.P. Morgan and John D. Rockefeller, among others -- was found to control an unreasonably large part of American railroad traffic, and was broken back up into its component railroads. This reestablished the Act as a potent weapon against monopolies, and it was used many times over the following century against major companies, if not always successfully. Here are some of the landmark decisions issued under an interpretation of the Sherman Antitrust Act, with brief explanations provided below (you can also click on their links for more information):

    Standard Oil Co. of New Jersey v. United States, 1911. United States v. Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) , 1945. United States v. AT&T (NYSE: T  ) , 1982. United States v. United States Steel (NYSE: X  ) , 1920. United States v. Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) , 2001. United States v. American Tobacco, 1911.

The Standard Oil breakup in 1911 is the most important turning point of the Act's early history. It set a standard for "reasonableness" that has since been applied many times to determine what made a monopoly truly anticompetitive. Between this decision and the one that broke the American Tobacco trust several weeks later, the Supreme Court of 1911 is responsible for creating three long-tenured members of the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) -- two of which (both oil companies) are still on the index today.

Magic Hat is releasing its first new year-round beer in many years, and the brewery has chosen wisely.

Dream Machine is an India pale lager that will satisfy the thousands of hopheads around the United States. Brewing it with lager yeast gives it a crisper body than an ale and that goes well with the intense citrusy hop flavors.

Since it was a lager, I poured my sample into a V-shaped pilsner glass. It was a wonderful sight watching the hypnotic swirl of bubbles cascading upward through the light amber liquid. The head it formed was snow white and rocky. It looked like it should be in an advertisement.

Best Sliver Stocks For 2014

The Federal Reserve is likely to keep the economy on a full dose of stimulus after this week's meeting but begin dialing it down by next month, say most economists surveyed by USA TODAY.

That would mark the Fed's first significant step in winding down the extraordinary easy-money programs it has put in place since the 2008 financial crisis and Great Recession, and signify that the economy should soon be strong enough to stand on its own.

The drama over whether the Fed will announce the tapering after a two-day meeting that concludes Wednesday has intensified recently, following a flurry of better-than-expected economic developments.

Just a handful of the 34 economists surveyed Dec. 12-13 predict the Fed this week will agree to pare its $85 billion in monthly bond purchases, but a slight majority say the tapering will begin by January. The purchases have held down interest rates and buoyed stocks, and trimming them is expected to gradually push up borrowing costs for consumers and businesses.

Hot Healthcare Technology Stocks To Buy Right Now

Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

What: Shares of GenMark Diagnostics (NASDAQ: GNMK  ) , a molecular diagnostics company, slumped as much as 10% after updating its full-year revenue guidance after the bell last night.

So what: Investors are dog-piling GenMark today following management's lowered guidance to $30 million in annual revenue versus previous expectations that had called for $35 million. Hany Massarany, CEO of GenMark Diagnostics, pointed to uncertainty regarding future revenue contributions from its largest customer, as well as ongoing reimbursement issues that are apparent through the entire pharmacogenomics sector, as the reasoning behind the tepid guidance.

Now what: Normally, a $5 million haircut isn't a big deal. However, if a company is losing money and that $5 million is a clean 14% below its original forecasts, then it's certainly going to garner a negative reaction. It also doesn't help that Natural Molecular Testing Corporation -- that aforementioned "large customer" -- recently entered in a multi-year collaboration with Luminex (NASDAQ: LMNX  ) earlier this month, casting a gray cloud over GenMark's future revenue stream with NMTC. Until we get better visibility from GenMark's management team and see the company moving toward profitability, this is a name I'd suggest keeping your distance from.

Finally, I always like to see one of the most important financial ratios applying to stockholders, the best measure of performance for a firm's management: the return on equity. The ratio has decreased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of major weakness. Moreover, it is worse than those shown in the table like Aegion Corporation (AEGN), EnerNOC Inc. (ENOC), MYR GroupInc. (MYRG) and Pike Corporation (PIKE).

Top 10 Undervalued Companies To Watch In Right Now

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has stuck to the task of painful economic reforms.

LONDON (CNNMoney) Investors are scouring Europe for ways to make money from its tentative recovery, and one U.S. firm thinks it has found the answer -- buy Greek government bonds.

Japonica Partners said it believed Greek debt was "massively undervalued" and should be rated several notches above the junk status assigned by the big credit rating agencies.

Greece has been shut out of international bond markets since 2010, when its government borrowing spiraled out of control.

It has been rescued twice by the European Union and International Monetary Fund and was forced to restructure its debt in March 2012, imposing losses of more than 100 billion euros on private bondholders.

Next Monday, Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever surprises inevitably arise. That way, you'll be less likely to have an uninformed, knee-jerk reaction that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

What's interesting is how that tug-of-war is playing out among individual companies. Among the gainers in the Dow this morning is Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) , which is up 1.1%. As I predicted earlier this week, Caterpillar followed through on its long streak of annual dividend increases with a 15% hike yesterday. Yet the move likely also reflects optimism about the U.S. economy, as Caterpillar retains a key domestic presence despite the importance of international markets like China. The stock has been stuck in the doldrums for a while now, so signs of life are a positive not just for Caterpillar investors but for the broader industrial sector.

Hot International Companies To Watch In Right Now

WASHINGTON (AP) Secret Service investigators say they are close to gaining a full understanding of the methods hackers used to breach retailer Target's computer systems last December.

But the agency says it could take years to identify the criminals who stole some 40,000 debit and credit card numbers of Target shoppers and other personal information from as many as 70 million people in the pre-Christmas breach.

And it may take even longer to bring the offenders to justice. The federal investigation is complicated by the international nature of high-profile digital heists. The perpetrators are likely located overseas, which makes extradition and prosecution difficult. As a result, the Secret Service is focused on monitoring the online activities of its suspects, in hopes that they'll be able to arrest them at an opportune moment, says Ari Baranoff, an assistant special agent in charge with the Secret Service's criminal investigative division.

In fact, today the company announced that it will be launching a new universal life product for the Canadian market called Manulife UL by May 26 of this year. The new product will offer cost-effective insurance protection, as well as the opportunity for tax-advantaged investing, catering to customer demands for a more simplified insurance solution, which should help boost sales to some extent. Although the firm balance sheet is highly leveraged, exposing it to possible damages in the case of higher-than-expected policy liabilities, Manulife capital position has improved substantially over the past year. With a ratio of regulatory capital to capital required at 248%, the firm possesses excessive capital levels, well above competitors like Prudential Public Limited Company (ADR) (PUK), China Life Insurance Company Ltd. (ADR) (LFC), and Sun Life Financial Inc. (USA) (SLF), which all sport a 200% ratio. Moreover, the company excessive capital should allow it to maintain the above average dividend yield of 2.66% offered to shareholders.
