Crimea economy rattled by Russia takeover

KIEV, Ukraine – Russia's takeover of Crimea is rattling the economy in the province where several foreign companies have pulled out and Ukrainian business-people are being forced out.

Banks such as Hungary's OTP, Russia's Alfa Bank and others are among the businesses that have pulled operations from Crimea. Meanwhile, Ukrainian businesses – PrivatBank, VAB Bank, Bank Kyivska Rus and Imexbank – have had their licenses to operate revoked by the Central Bank of Russia.

"State-owned Russian banks are likely to take the space of the banks that have exited the peninsula in the near future," said Lilit Gevorgyan, senior sovereign risk analyst at IHS Global Insight in London. "It will take a considerable amount of time for private banking to return."

A bank targeted by American sanctions in retaliation for the annexation – Bank Rossiya – was one of the first to open a branch on the peninsula after the Russian invasion.

Russia President Vladimir Putin signed legislation in April declaring the region to be Russian territory following a disputed referendum by locals opting to join its neighbor. Russia had troops move into the province before the vote, which the West said was rigged in favor of pro-Russian Crimeans.

Since the takeover, Crimea seems to resemble the Putin economic policy of rewarding supporters through government actions.

McDonald's closed its three Crimean restaurants "due to the suspension of necessary financial and banking services" a company statement said. And some Ukrainians elsewhere in Ukraine are pulling back from spending money there.

"We don't want to spend our money in Russia," said Olena Zaitseva, a Ukrainian marine biologist who regularly conducts field work in Crimea. This year, she said she would cancel her trip.

The economic impact of Zaitseva's absence is more significant than it might at first appear. Under Ukrainian rule, sunflower seed exports, tourism, shipbuilding and solar energy were the mainstays of the Crimean economy! . But they've never been lucrative industries.

Governments in Kiev have struggled to bring Crimea's economy to the same standard of living as other Ukrainian regions since the former Soviet republic achieved independence in 1991.

Still, the region's per capita earnings are still around one-third lower than the rest of the country, according to a 2011 report by the Razumkov Center, an economic think tank in Kiev.

Ukraine's failure to turn around the peninsula's fortunes hasn't been lost on Putin.

"The Kremlin is keen to showcase the advantages of being part of the Russian economy," Gevorgyan said. "The Russian government has already announced $7 billion worth of spending projects which would also include building a connecting bridge with mainland Russia."

The public investment could signal the cutting of economic ties between Crimea and Ukraine for a long period of time, said Igor Burakovsky, director of the Institute for Economic Research and Policy Consulting in Kiev.

"Businesses have to be registered according to the Russian laws," Burakovsky said. "Definitely there will be some problems in order to work with the continental part of the Ukraine."

The situation is especially dire as the summer vacation season approaches.

Around 4 million Ukrainians and 2 million Russians regularly go on their summer vacations in the Crimea. There have been reports of Russian plans to create a free economic area as well as a gambling zone with casinos to attract more Russian tourists in order to replace Ukrainians who aren't expected to return.

"The annexation of Crimea made me stop being lazy and ! finally f! ile documents for an international passport," said Yuriy Voronkov, a web developer from Kiev who is thinking about vacations in India or Thailand.

Anna Kholodnova, 23, of Kiev said she won't be going to the annual Koktebel Jazz Festival on the Black Sea coast. "It's not appealing to me anymore," she said.

Future developments — including unrest in Ukraine's largely Russian-speaking East — are also likely to create economic problems.

Ukraine has been providing energy and water to the peninsula, for example. It's not clear how long those utilities will remain. Ukrainians who sympathize with Kiev are still living in the region, so officials don't want to leave them in the dark or without water.

Still, the Ukrainian government has curbed the flow of water enough to harm agriculture, Burakovsky said. For Russia, meanwhile, the price tag for assimilating parts of Ukraine is growing.

In April, Standard & Poor's downgraded Russia's credit rating for the first time in more than five years to a notch above "junk" status. In late April, the International Monetary Fund said in a statement that capital outflow from Russia "increased significantly" in the first three months of 2014 to $51 billion. The Fund noted that investment in Russia would further dwindle because of the geopolitical situation.

The U.S. and European Union have also levied sanctions against Russian officials and companies with close links to Putin.

Gevorgyan estimated that pension payments for seniors, public sector wages and paying for half-completed infrastructure projects, including three power stations under development, would cost Moscow around roughly $5 billion annually.

Best Heal Care Companies To Watch In Right Now

Between the sanctions, investors pulling out and the chaotic business climate that's developed during the ongoing crisis, nobody will be eager to put money into Crimea a! nytime so! on unless its Russian government funding, Gevorgyan said.

"Until the geopolitical crisis is put to rest for some time, it is hard to see investors flocking Crimea, including Russian private capital," she said.

For the past several years, Berkshire has contrasted its own cost-free float provided by profitable underwriting against the industry (unimpressive) tendency to lose money on underwriting while generating net returns from investment income. So far, so good. Less edifying, though, is the repeated contrast of Berkshire track record of profitability to State Farm…even though, as a mutual company, State Farm profitability goals are inherently different from for-profit insurers like Berkshire. It true that through year-end 2013, Berkshire underwriters have ow operated at an underwriting profit for eleven consecutive years, but so have ACE (ACE), American Financial (AFG), AmTrust Financial (AFSI), Arch Capital (ACGL), Chubb (CB), HCC (HCC), Progressive (PGR), RLI (RLI), and W.R. With natural gas prices back on the upswing today, those same companies that had written down their assets in 2012 can start to put them back on the books. This is whyRange Resources (NYSE: RRC  ) and Cabot Oil & Gas (NYSE: COG  ) both have reserve replacement costs below $6.25, one-fifth of the industry average. Both of these companies have very natural gas-heavy portfolios, so as gas prices go back up, they can put these assets back on their books without spending any money on further exploration or acquisitions.

To be fair, these revenues come from their stake in game company Changyou (NASDAQ: CYOU  ) . Because Sohu owns a majority stake in Changyou, Sohu must consolidate all financials into its statements -- even as Changyou is independently listed on stock exchanges. Whatever the case, Sohu actually created Changyou -- it started as a business unit in 2003, then was spun out in 2007. In any case, Sohu should do some serious soul-searching.

Hot Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now

Hot Tech Stocks To Watch Right Now: Five Prime Therapeutics Inc (FPRX)

Five Prime Therapeutics, Inc., incorporated on December 20, 2001, is a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on discovering and developing protein therapeutics. Protein therapeutics is antibodies or drugs developed from extracellular proteins or protein fragments that block disease processes, including cancer and inflammatory diseases. The Company's advanced product candidates include FP-1039/GSK3052230 (FP-1039), FPA008 and FPA144. FP-1039 is a protein therapeutic that traps and neutralizes cancer-promoting fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), involved in cancer cell proliferation and new blood vessel formation. FPA008 is an antibody that inhibits colony stimulating factor-1 receptor (CSF1R), and is being developed to treat patients with inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). FPA144 is an antibody that inhibits FGF receptor 2b (FGFR2b), and is being developed to treat patients with gastric cancer and potentially other solid tumors.

FP-1039

FP-1039 is a protein therapeutic, which includes the extracellular part of FGFR1. FP-1039 acts as an inhibitor of FGFs, because the FGFR1 portion of the molecule binds to FGFs and prevents them from binding to FGFR1 on tumor and blood vessel cells. Because FGF proteins circulating in the blood are called ligands, FP-1039 is called a ligand trap. FP-1039 also includes a portion of an antibody called the Fc region. In preclinical testing, it observed inhibition of tumor growth with single-agent FP-1039, particularly in tumors withFGFR1 gene amplification, including squamous NSCLC and SCLC.

FPA008

FPA008 is an antibody that inhibits CSF1R and is being developed to treat patients with RA. FPA008 also has the potential to treat patients with other inflammatory diseases, including lupus nephritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing s! pondylitis, fibrosis, inflammatory bowel disease and multiple sclerosis. These are chronic, incurable diso rders with serious medical complications and disability for ! which better therapies with novel mechanisms of action are needed. FPA008 is an anti-CSF1R antibody, which it designed to block the ability of IL-34 and CSF1 to bind to and activate CSF1R. FPA008 reduces the numbers and activity of monocytes and macrophages that cause disease, and prevents the production and release of inflammatory factors. The Company and others has demonstrated that both IL-34 and CSF1 are present at increased levels in the inflamed joints of patients with RA.

FPA144

FPA144 is a monoclonal antibody directed against a form of FGFR2, or FGFR2b. When the FGFR2 gene is amplified by cancer cells, the FGFR2b protein is expressed at abnormally high levels on the tumor's surface. This occurs in some patients with gastric and lower esophageal cancers. The tumor cells that have too much FGFR2b protein on their surface can be identified by special staining tests performed on the tumor. Because FGFR2b is the target for FPA144, patients' t umors can be screened for this protein, helping to identify the patients most likely to respond to FPA144 treatment.

Top Rising Stocks To Buy For 2015

After declines over the past week have sent the Dow Jones Industrials (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) down by more than 650 points, early signs this morning point to a potential rebound for the beleaguered U.S. stock market, with projections suggesting about a 70-point rise at the open. Yet even with some favorable news emerging both abroad and domestically, you need to be cautious before concluding that the worst of the recent correction is over.

Overnight, some favorable news has calmed global investors somewhat and sent U.S. stock futures markets higher as well. With the Chinese central bank making reassuring gestures in order to address fears that a credit crisis could further slow the emerging nation's economic growth, Asian stock markets recovered from their worst levels of the trading day, with Chinese stocks in particular rising from lows not seen since the depths of the financial crisis in 2009. European markets are also up broadly, with the major stock indexes in France, Germany, and the U.K. gaining between 1% and 1.5%. With durable-goods orders in the U.S. up 3.6% last month, investors can also point to the prospects for a strong domestic economy in justifying a market advance.

David Tulis/AP It's beginning to look a lot like ... the day after Christmas? On the day before Christmas, retailers turned shoppers' attention to the day after the holiday. Amazon.com (AMZN) already is offering "after Christmas" deals of up to 70 percent off clothes and 60 percent off some electronics. Old Navy (GPS) is running TV ads that its "after-holiday sale starts early" with discounts of up to 75 percent off. And CVS (CVS) was selling a wine cabinet for $10 off at $39.99 and three fleece throws for $9.99 on Christmas Eve. Heather Nadler, 38, stopped by the CVS in Decatur, Ga., on Tuesday, searching for stuffed animals for her children. But she still plans to hit up sales after Christmas. "I'll probably start shopping for me at that point," she said. Stores usually wait until after Christmas to offer discounts of up to 70 percent or more on holiday merchandise that didn't sell. But Americans who are still worried about the economy have held tightly to their purse strings this year, and store sales have fallen for the past three consecutive weeks. The pre-Christmas deals come as retailers are feeling pressure to attract Americans into stores during the final week of what's typically the busiest shopping period of the year. The two-month stretch that begins on Nov. 1 is important because retailers can make up to 40 percent of their annual sales during that time. Sales at U.S. stores dropped 3.1 percent to $42.7 billion for the week that ended on Sunday compared with the same week last year, according to ShopperTrak, which tracks data at 40,000 locations. That follows a decline of 2.9 percent and 0.8 percent during the first and second weeks of the month, respectively. Stores had a problem even getting Americans into stores, let alone getting them to spend. The number of shoppers fell 21.2 percent during the week that ended on Sunday, according to ShopperTrak. AP Photo/Burger King Companies can make brilliant moves, but there are also times when things don't work out quite as planned. From a Japanese gaming pioneer finally cutting prices on its poor selling devices to a burger chain introducing a burger for a buck, here's a rundown of the week's smartest moves and biggest blunders in the business world. Walmart (WMT) -- Winner The country's biggest retailer was singled out in this column last week for the way that it's bringing back its layaway plan for the holiday shopping season. And this week it earns another shout out. In a memo to its associates this week, Walmart revealed that its health insurance policies for 2014 will cover "any spouse or domestic partner" regardless of gender. Walmart knows that this is still a polarizing topic. However, by opening up health coverage to domestic partners -- gay or straight -- Walmart is likely to score points with many who have been critical of the company's practices in the past. Sure, we can lament that just half of Walmart's 1.3 million associates have elected health coverage through the company. No one's saying the giant discounter is perfect. However, this move will help improve its image with a lot of its detractors. Burger King (BKW) -- Loser Burger chains are bucking the trend these days, beefing up their dollar menus at a time when the economy is showing signs of life. There's a reason for that. Customers are moving up to higher quality "fast casual" establishments that offer better food at slightly higher price points with the convenience of counter service. Burger King's latest push was announced this week. It will add a French fry-topped hamburger -- for a buck -- to its menu in September. There's nothing inherently wrong with the new sandwich. Who hasn't placed fries inside their burger from time to time? However, this seems like a bad play for franchisees: They may see fry sales slip at the hands of penny-pinching diners believing that they can knock of

Zale (NYSE: ZLC  ) is a specialty retailer of fine jewelry that has 1064 stores and 630 kiosks across North America. If you have ever walked through a mall, then you're familiar with the name Zale. With strong brand name recognition and the company swinging to a profit in fiscal-year 2013, you would think Zale should present a quality investment opportunity. While this is a possibility, there are several reasons why one much larger jewelry company should present a better long-term investment opportunity.

    Stick with quality
LDK Solar and Suntech Power (NYSE: STP  ) have already defaulted on debt, and the most leveraged Chinese manufacturers may follow others into full on bankruptcy (Suntech's subsidiary is already bankrupt, but the parent company isn't). Betting on leverage and hope for a recovery in China is a dangerous game, and investors should stick with high-quality manufacturers.

Most of the move in Trina's stock has come in just the past month, as two trends have really taken hold since April. First, U.S. companies First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) have given rosy projections of their respective future prospects, as First Solar aims to improve its panels' efficiency through its acquisition of TetraSun, and SunPower has benefited from its industry-leading efficiency in boosting its profits. In addition, with the bond default earlier this year by Suntech Power (NYSE: STP  ) , some believe that the Chinese government might allow weaker Chinese players to fail, which could potentially lead to reduced production and end what has been a crippling supply glut that has weighed on prices around the world.

  • [By Michael Lewis]

Formerly the biggest maker of solar panels in the world, with more than 10,000 employees, China-based Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE: STP  ) has witnessed a long fall from grace. The nail in the coffin came in March, when the company failed to pay a $513 million debt obligation. Shortly following its default, the company sailed into Chinese bankruptcy protection. Fast-forward to this week and the company is trading more than 30% higher on a largely speculative rumor that Warren Buffett is looking to buy it.

  • [By Paul Ausick]

Provided that the Chinese government either encourages or permits consolidation, any of these three could be an acquirer. The likeliest target, of course, is SunTech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP), which is reorganizing and which the government has already seemed to give up on. Other possible targets include ReneSola Ltd. (NYSE: SOL) and JinkoSolar Holding Co. Ltd. (NYSE: JKS).

www.sixflags.com Major market indexes may be hitting new highs, but not everyone is celebrating. Given the lofty stock valuations and slowly expanding economy, many investors are starting to hunt for high-yielding stocks that can provide some steady income to help offset any upcoming market declines. Utility stocks, real estate investment trusts and limited partnerships are magnetic because of their chunky yields, but let's look beyond the obvious high-payers. Let's check out a few investments generating high payouts in some unlikely places. Six Flags (SIX) -- 5.1 percent yield It seems as if you can't run an amusement park chain as a public company without rewarding your stakeholders with some spending money for the next time they hit the park. This can probably be attributed to Cedar Fair (FUN), which as a limited partnership shells out most of its profits as distributions. This translated into a head-turning yield of 5.7 percent. Six Flags isn't too shabby, presently yielding more than 5 percent. Even SeaWorld (SEAS) is now brandishing a yield north of 4 percent, largely the result of losing nearly a third of its value after a poorly received quarterly report a few weeks ago. Running a theme park isn't cheap. It takes frequent sizable investments during the off-seasons to beef up the attractions. However, Six Flags is finding a way to build out its gated attractions while still being able to return money to its shareholders. Mattel (MAT) -- 4.3 percent yield Barbie, Hot Wheels and American Girl are just some of the famous playthings produced by Mattel. Barbie sales have slowed in recent years, plunging 15 percent in Mattel's latest quarter, and having a few more hit toys and games this upcoming holiday season wouldn't hurt. The toy-making giant has been struggling lately, missing Wall Street's profit targets in each of the past three quarters. Still, toy makers apparently don't play games when it comes to their payouts. On the battlefield, you can always tell when the commanding officer is close to beginning a major assault when he starts to move pieces of military hardware around to maximize their effectiveness in light of the battle plan. The same idea applies in the business world - when personnel additions are made, and people are moved around, it's usually the beginning of something big. That's why investors may want to prep themselves for something big from Independent Film Development Corporation (OTCMKTS:IFLM). The company placed a new CEO today after naming a CFO last week, and moved the previous CEO over to the lead role of real estate operations [which was always the plan]. So what? Lori Shepler/AP A financial windfall will accompany LeBron James when he returns to northeastern Ohio. Following the NBA superstar's decision over the weekend to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Cuyahoga County officials estimated that the local economy will benefit to the tune of roughly $500 million a year. A little more than half of that windfall will come from the games themselves as ticket sales spike with fans willing to pay more -- and more often -- to see James play near his hometown of Akron. The balance will come from tourism and the exposure that comes from TV coverage that will gravitate to Cavaliers home games. Some experts, though. caution that the real revenue will be far less. However, an unlikely winner from James' move may be of the country's largest amusement park operators. Please Secure All Loose Belongings Just 62 miles separate the Cavs' arena and Cedar Fair's (FUN) Cedar Point amusement park, on a scenic peninsula in Sandusky. Last Wednesday -- two days before James made his big announcement that he would leave the Miami Heat after four seasons -- Cedar Point made an interesting Twitter post: "Hey @KingJames - come back to the @cavs and we'll rename one of our coasters, 'King James!' Ball in your court, sir. RT, #Ohio!" It wasn't just talk. Shortly after James announced his decision to return home, Cedar Point promised to live up to its earlier promise: "It's been fun to watch the excitement surrounding the return of @KingJames to Cleveland. We stand ready to honor our original tweet." James has been to the park a couple of times, and there's a YouTube video of him being heckled there while taking in a game of hoops -- naturally, after he had left Cleveland for Miami. However, the initially radical thought of renaming a coaster King James now sounds like a winning move with the game's best basketball player coming back home as a prodigal son. That should be good news for Cedar Point and possibly even better news for Cedar Fair.

Top 10 Prefered Companies To Invest In 2015

Auto sales in the U.S. grew 9.2% to 1.40 million units in Jun, translating into a 13.2% year-over-year rise to a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of 15.96 million units, the fastest since Dec 2007. The increase was largely attributable to a growing popularity of pickups among buyers amidst improvements in housing, construction and energy sectors.

This apart, strong pent-up demand, plethora of new models, lower interest on auto loans and a resilient economy leading to higher consumer confidence contributed to the big push.

The pickup boom was evident. Detroit Big Three, General Motors Company (GM), Ford Motor Company (F) and Chrysler, sold 157,480 full-size pickup trucks during the month, up 25% from Jun last year. As a result, average prices of pickups went up 2% year-over-year to $40,361 in Jun, as Kelley Blue Book has revealed.

No doubt, there would be a strong pent up demand, as average age of vehicles on U.S. roads is more then 11 years now. Its worth to mention that interest on auto loans was at near historic low in June. According to Bankrate.com, the average rate on a four-year car loan is 2.7%. The low rate is sustainable for a near term, as Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has pledged to maintain short-term interest rates at record lows until the unemployment rate reaches 6.5%.

Two months since becoming chief executive at Forest Laboratories (FRX), and Brenton Saunders is putting his mark on the drug maker.

On Monday, Forest outlined roject Rejuvenate,a plan to cut costs $500 million by 2016, while scaling back research and development efforts and reducing the company work force.

It been a common story among big pharmaceutical companies. The industry has grown to depend on acquisitions and licensing deals or partnerships with small drug makers rather than in-house efforts to produce the blockbuster products needed to grow sales and offset revenue lost to generic rivals.

Investors seem to approve. At $55.54, the stock surged 8.2% during afternoon market action.

It was actually a pretty busy day for Forest. Though it restructuring plans attracted the most attention, the company also announced the sale of $1 billion of new debt to help fund $400 million in accelerated stock buybacks as part of a larger $1 billion share repurchase plan and a $250 million deal to acquire exclusive rights to the schizophrenia medication Saphris from Merck & Co. (MRK).

Altogether, it could be quite a boon for Forest bottom line. Leerink Swann analyst Seamus Fernandez raised his per share earnings estimate for 2015 and 2016 to $2.89 and $3.24 respectively from the previous $1.87 and $1.19. Fernandez writes:

We see several potential accretive Saphris-like opportunities for FRX particularly as companies like MRK partner or exit cost-intensive primary care/specialty categories (e.g., respiratory, antibiotics/antifungal, cardiology, GI, CNS). Incorporating these changes (and assuming no impact to sales ests of FRX’s existing portfolio), our new DCF valuation increases to $63/shr.
