We could always blame Europe for the shortfall; I mean everyone else is doing it, right? Just yesterday, niche diagnostic and device maker for infants and newborns Natus Medical (NASDAQ: BABY  ) warned that its revenue would be short of the Street's estimates because of tepid European demand for its products. Even having products with little competition in a niche category (infants and newborns) wasn't enough to save Natus Medical; could that be the reason Intuitive is faltering?

Facebook Loses Gains as Teens Flee

Top 5 Quality Stocks To Buy Right Now

Comments on teen usage of Facebook have been added to this story, along with the company's updated share price.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Despite the impressive earnings beat, Facebook (FB) shares were only up 0.33% to $49.17 after the company noted teens are using the service less.

CFO David Ebersman said that teens are using the service the same, but daily users in the teen demographic slid from the second to the third quarter. Ebermsan noted there isn't an entirely accurate way to measure this, but the company is working on internal metrics to ascertain what is going on.

These comments helped fuel a sell-off in the stock, which was up as much as 13% in after-hours trading, nearly giving up all of its gains following the earnings results. Facebook reported earnings of 25 cents a share on $2.02 billion in revenue, as mobile revenue surged to 49% of total advertising revenue, approximately $881 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters were looking for earnings of 19 cents per share on $1.91 billion in revenue. The company noted it generated $1.8 billion in advertising revenue, up 66% year over year. Payments and other fees revenue came in at $218 million. The company ended the quarter with 1.19 billion monthly active users (MAUs), up 18% year-over-year, with daily active users (DAUs) up 25% during the same time frame to 728 million users. Mobile MAUs grew 45% year-over-year to 874 million, with 507 million of them using the service daily at the end of the quarter. Shares of Facebook fell during the regular session, losing 0.76% to close at $49.02. --Written by Chris Ciaccia in New York >Contact by Email. Follow @Chris_Ciaccia

Investors aren done punishing Lululemon Athletica (LULU).

The yoga apparel maker disappointed investors Thursday when it said it would report far lower sales during the fourth quarter than investors had expected and cuts its full-year financial forecasts for the current year. In doing so, Lululemon erased the good will it had earned Tuesday, when it announced that its controversial founder, Chip Wilson, was out as chairman and a new CEO was in.

Investors sent the shares plunging, and Barrons.com weighed in bearishly on the stock, noting the challenges facing the new CEO (see Barron’s Take, “Lululemon: Bottom-Fishers Beware,” Dec. 12).

Today, theselloff continued amid a string of slashed earnings estimates, price target cuts and a downgrade by Credit Suisse.

At $59, Lululemon fell 2.3%, adding to yesterday nearly 12% drop.

In a note published today, Credit Suisse analyst Christian Buss cut Lululemon from Outperform to Neutral and cut its price target by one-third to $59, calling the company lowered expectations significant source of concern. He writes:

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] things I said was that I knew George Risk's materials cost was higher than some competitors' selling price. The fact that any company could survive under conditions like that immediately suggested that dollars paid for the product was not the key concern for this product.

Perceived costs had to involve other concerns like customization, shipping speed, reliability, etc. Because it was a low cost product going into a higher cost product going into very high cost projects it seemed likely there was the opportunity to raise prices if needed. And that's what they ended up doing. The important clue for me in that investigation was the severe cost disadvantage George Risk had. You couldn compete at such a cost disadvantage unless price was less important than I initially thought.

I think you will find that most of these insights are not available in the financial statements. They come from reading the 10-Ks of all companies in the industry, reading articles about the companies, listening to all conference call transcripts, etc.

For example, there is not much in the financial statements of Carnival (CCL) that explains how the cruise business really works. But all of the companies in the industry (CCL, RCL and NCL) freely discuss the economics of their business in great detail. They break out costs before and after fuel. They give you per-passenger prices of how much newly built ships cost. They give you lots and lots of details. They explain how they price their product (the way airlines do) and so on. There is an extreme level of detailed explanation of the business in the various conference calls, 10-Ks, etc.

A great source for this information is going back to the time the company went public or at least finding the S-1 of a competitor. When a company goes public it often gives much more detail into product economics, etc., than it will later on when it reports annual results.

That is also a good place to learn about market share, com

  • [By Geoff Gannon] >Ark Restaurants (ARKR). When I bought them - and even now - I think their return on buyback would be high and I'd be in favor of it. However, the stocks are illiquid and their free cash flow relative to the dollar value of freely traded shares is not high. As a result, I'm always in favor of RSKIA and ARKR buying back stock. But, I understand it's very hard for them to do in practice unless there is a meaningful holder who signals he wants out of the stock.

My approach to buybacks is pretty simple. One, I prefer them. Two, I look at the share count history over the last 10 to 20 years as my guide to what the company might do in the future - I want a pattern of predictable behavior. Generally, that means a continuously shrinking share count that shrinks in bull markets and bear markets, panics and recessions and booms and busts and so on. Three, if I'm a buyer of the stock - then the company should be a buyer of its own stock. No questions asked on that one. If the stock is good enough for me to buy it's clearly good enough for the company to buy. Finally, I look for the return on buyback. I tend to focus on the earning power the company is buying relative to the net cash it is spending. If a company has cash on its balance sheet, the amount of net cash consumed by a buyback will be less than it appears because I will end up with a greater percentage ownership of the resulting balance sheet as well as the income statement.

I want the return on buyback to always be at least 10%. As a rule, the average company will only get returns on its buybacks of 10% or higher if it pays less than 15 times normal earnings. In special cases - fast growing companies, companies where free cash flow vastly exceeds reported income, etc. - it is possible that buybacks above 15 times earnings will return more than 10%. It almost never makes sense for a company to buy back stock at over 25 times earnings. So, for most companies, under 15 times earnings is the green zone for bu

  • [By Ashraf Eassa]

However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are short, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

In at least one Texas bank and one Ohio credit union, 3D video banking is currently undergoing testing, according to TheFinancialBrand.com, a website for bank and credit union marketing executives. Three-dimensional video banking is similar to a consumer video conference with a bank representative –- only in this case, the executive looks like a living, breathing person sitting across from you. Thanks to theater surround sound, the representative also sounds as if they're in the same room. And since the consumer is interacting with a real person and not an automated hologram, the experience apparently isn't much different than the real thing. Consumers became acquainted with online banking during the 1990s and the first decade of the 2000s. The 2010s are shaping up as the era of mobile banking. That was underscored Sept. 10-11 in New York City when Mitek Systems Inc. The product allows consumers to open a bank account within 60 seconds. 10 Best Low Price Stocks To Invest In Right Now: Dynavax Technologies Corporation(DVAX)

Dynavax Technologies Corporation, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, discovers and develops novel products to prevent and treat infectious diseases. The company's lead product candidate includes HEPLISAV, a Phase 3 investigational adult hepatitis B vaccine designed to provide protection with fewer doses than current licensed vaccines. It also develops Universal Flu vaccine, a Phase 1b clinical trial vaccine for influenza prevention; SD-101, a Phase Ib clinical trial hepatitis C therapy; DV-601, a Phase Ib clinical trial hepatitis B therapy; AZD1419, a preclinical asthma therapy; and DV1179, a Phase 1 trial autoimmune and inflammatory disease therapy. Dynavax Technologies Corporation has strategic alliance with GlaxoSmithKline plc to discover, develop, and commercialize DV1179 and other endosomal toll-like receptor inhibitors for diseases, such as lupus, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis; and develop a TLR8 inhibitor for the treatment of multiple autoimmune and i nflammatory diseases, as well as has research and license agreement with AstraZeneca to discover and develop TLR9 agonist-based therapies for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The company was founded in 1996 and is based in Berkeley, California.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Keith Speights]

Dynavax (NASDAQ: DVAX  ) is a good case in point. The company's Heplisav hepatitis B vaccine looked good in clinical trials when compared to the leading vaccine on the market. Dynavax thought that the safety profile for Heplisav also compared favorably. The Food and Drug Administration even told the company that it could expand its Biologic License Application, or BLA, to include a wider age range of adults than originally planned.

Another under-$10 bio therapeutic player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a major breakout trade is Dynavax Technologies (DVAX), which discovers and develops novel products to prevent and treat infectious and inflammatory diseases. This stock has been hit hard by the sellers so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 55%.

If you take a look at the chart for Dynavax Technologies, you'll notice that this stock has been trending inside of a big range for the last three months and change, with shares moving between $1.10 on the downside and $1.46 on the upside. This large consolidation pattern for DVAX could mean that this stock is under accumulation by the bulls, since the bears have been unable to push the stock out of this range and take it to new lows. Shares of DVAX are now starting to spike back above its 50-day moving average of $1.25 a share with decent upside volume. Volume so far on Thursday has already registered 1.6 million shares versus its three-month average action or 1.81 million shares. This move is starting to push DVAX within range of triggering a major breakout trade.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in DVAX if it manages to break out above some key overhead resistance levels at $1.29 to $1.32 a share, and then once it takes out more resistance at $1.46 to $1.50 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that registers near or above its three-month average action of 1.81 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then DVAX will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at $1.70 a share. Any high-volume move above $1.70 a share will then give DVAX a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone from June that started at $2.60 a share.

Traders can look to buy DVAX off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support at $1.10 a sha

Of course, developing a product for a market with great opportunity doesn't guarantee success for your investment strategy. An estimated 1 million people die each year from complications related to hepatitis B. Dynavax (NASDAQ: DVAX  ) developed a hep-B vaccine, Heplisav, that showed tremendous promise. However, safety concerns derailed approval for the drug. While Heplisav might still reach the market, Dynavax's experience highlights the risks even in a market with solid potential.

This spike higher on Thursday is starting to push shares of ATHX within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. Top 5 Japanese Companies To Own In Right Now

NEW YORK As 2013 comes to a close, efforts to revive growth in the world most influential economies with the exception of the eurozone are having a beneficial effect worldwide. All of the looming problems for the global economy are political in character.

After 25 years of stagnation, Japan is attempting to reinvigorate its economy by engaging in quantitative easing on an unprecedented scale. It is a risky experiment: faster growth could drive up interest rates, making debt-servicing costs unsustainable. But Prime Minister Shinzo Abe would rather take that risk than condemn Japan to a slow death. And, judging from the public enthusiastic support, so would ordinary Japanese.

By contrast, the European Union is heading toward the type of long-lasting stagnation from which Japan is desperate to escape. The stakes are high: Nation-states can survive a lost decade or more; but the EU, an incomplete association of nation-states, could easily be destroyed by it.

Question: I like the H2O business. Ie owned American Water Works Co Inc (NYSE: AWK) for eons. Is there any compelling reason to own more than one water utility? At what point does is there no marginal benefit added? I do like Connecticut Water Service Inc (NSDQ: CTWS) and York Water Co (NSDQ: YORW) as slow, consistent growers.

Last month when Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) agreed to acquire the other half of its joint venture, Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN), from Siemens A.G. (NYSE: SI) for $2.2 billion, we wondered what in the world the Finnish mobile phone maker could have been thinking. That is still a reasonable query.

  • [By Dan Carroll]

Siemens's (NYSE: SI  ) stock hasn't fared so well recently: Its shares have shed 4.8% year to date. Incrased exports should help if that trend keeps up, as Siemens conducts a significant amount of international business as Germany's pre-eminent engineering firm. Company leadership still projects a double-digit profit margin for 2014 despite the weak business climate in Europe, although Siemens has already lowered its outlook for the current year as solar-related losses and other charges weigh on its bottom line. Siemens will need to charge up its energy business to succeed, as the company expects profit from the unit to come in on the low side of earlier full-year projections.

  • [By Louie Grint]

    A discouraging diagnosis
Second, here's a well-known global leader in most of its key businesses: Siemens AG (NYSE: SI  ) .

In this case, the company reported a lackluster fourth quarter, with a year-over-year decrease in both revenue and earnings. Revenue and orders dropped 1% to 21.2 billion euros and 21 billion euros, respectively.

The 2 Stocks Leading the Dow's Surge

Following a positive jobs report, the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) is up 157 points, or 1.05%, to 15,198 as of 1:25 p.m. EDT. The S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) is up 0.92% to 1,637.

There were two U.S. economic releases today.

Investors were worried about the jobs report after Wednesday's private-sector payrolls report disappointed and depressed Dow stocks. The government's nonfarm payroll report showed that the economy added 175,000 jobs in May, beating expectations of 164,000 additional jobs.

US Change in Nonfarm Payrolls Chart

US Change in Nonfarm Payrolls data by YCharts.

The jump in job creation was not enough to stop a rise in the unemployment rate to 7.6%, but that uptick was the result of more people entering the labor market. This is positive for the economy, as it means more people feel they can find a job. And a higher unemployment rate is good for asset prices, because it means the Fed will keep up its asset purchases. Currently, the Federal Reserve is buying $85 billion of long-term assets every month -- $45 billion of long-term Treasuries and $40 billion of mortgage-backed securities. The Fed has said that it will continue the purchases until inflation rises above 2% or unemployment falls below 6.5%. Inflation is currently running around 1%, and expectations for inflation going forward, per the TIPS spread -- the difference between the yields on Treasury Inflation Protection Securities and the nominal U.S. Treasury bond yield -- is 2% for the next five years.

Today's Dow leaders
American Express (NYSE: AXP  ) is among today's Dow outperformers, up 2%. More employed Americans and more people looking for work should mean more spending going forward, which is a good trend for American Express. American Express benefits doubly from the economy strengthening as it means less bad debt. Unlike Visa and Mastercard which only process transactions and rely on banks to lend credit, American Express lends its own money to its members. It therefore is incentivized to not only have customers make transactions but to make sure they can make good on those transactions.

Best Retail Stocks For 2015

Also flying high today is Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) , up 2.2%. Earlier today Boeing stock hit a 52-week high of $102.25. Boeing is up 30% since March, when it looked like the company had solved the issues with the batteries of its Dreamliner aircraft. If you recall, the Dreamliner was grounded in January by the FAA due to problems with its lithium battery. Now that the problem has been solved, Boeing can resume deliveries of the Dreamliner to. Boeing has also been making news on some other fronts. So far this month the company has won two contracts from the Pentagon that, while small, sow the seeds for potentially massive new opportunities in the future.

Boeing is a major player in a multitrillion-dollar market in which the opportunities are massive. However, emerging competitors and the company's execution problems have investors wondering whether Boeing will live up to its shareholder responsibilities. Top Semiconductor Stocks To Watch Right Now

In the Aug. 2 Strategic Tech Investor, we introduced you to a new hot tech stock to buy: a Silicon Valley semiconductor company that is leading the charge into ultra-high-definition (UHD) video.

And we predicted the stock - which Wall Street had yet to discover - would double in less than three years.

It only took five months.

If you didn't pull the trigger on this under-the-radar stock, don't fret: The Wall Street pros are now interested and are saying this stock could double or triple from here.

And we agree.

This microchip player's existing businesses are zooming along at 40% and 50% annual rates. And the firm just announced a pact with Internet-search giant heavyweight Google Inc. (Nasdaq: GOOG), which we'll find out more about at the massive Consumer Electronics Show (CES) opening in Las Vegas Tuesday.

There's an old adage that says you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

And there's an investing parallel: You never get a second chance to get in on a "ground-floor" profit play.

The Atari 2600 launched at a cost of $199 (equal to about $750 today) in the fall of 1977. The console's first two years on the market almost sent it the way of the Osyssey, since Atari managed to sell less than one million units by the end of 1978. However, Fairchild Semiconductor's (NYSE: FCS  ) decision to abandon console gaming in 1979 (it had actually beaten Atari to market with the Channel F in 1976, but sold fewer units than the 2600), coupled with the launch of a Space Invaders cartridge for the 2600 in 1980, gave Atari a clear path to huge sales. Two years later, the 2600 had reached ten million households, and console gaming had a foothold. Atari was briefly the crown jewel in Warner's entertainment empire, but this success wouldn't last.

Gordon Moore and Robert Noyce were part of the founding team behind Fairchild Semiconductor (NYSE: FCS  ) in 1957. In 11 years, the two men would forge legendary hardware-engineering careers. They developed the first practical integrated circuits, created the most widely recognized "law" of computing power, and built the chips that helped man land on the moon. But after 11 years, the two chip makers left the plodding Fairchild behind for even greater ambitions. On July 18, 1968, they founded Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) , a company that would quickly and vastly eclipse their former employer.
